Margaret Bennettabout this book: A lighthearted romance with intrigue, A Lady's Dilemma tells the story of Maxwell Aldwyn, a war hero and the son of the powerful Duke of Blackmoor, who has just returned from working with Wellington on the continent. He's immediately recruited by the War Office to capture a French spy operating among the beau monde. However, fearing his reputation precedes him, he reinvents himself as a dandy, a clumsy popinjay, much to his father's chagrin.
But unexpectedly, Max's disguise becomes more of an extension of himself as he discovers he enjoys dressing extravagantly and putting on airs. Furthermore, he finds society's whimsical approach toward his eccentricity allows him freedom to ferret out the French mole while advancing his interest in the lovely Lady Penelope Lenwood.
As for Penelope, despite being engaged to Victor Bynes since she was fifteen, she befriends Lord Maxwell as a safe and entertaining escort to social events and soon finds herself drawn to the flamboyant Lord Aldwyn. But even as Victor suddenly develops a possessiveness for her that turns abusive, she is reluctant to break the engagement, for the dandified Lord Maxwell seems to be more interested in chasing after men rather than keeping her company.
