Vicky S Kaseorgabout this book: I took my seven year old homeschooled daughter on a field trip to tour the unusual radio towers at WBT-Radio at my engineer brother's request. He assured me these towers were rare, and fascinating. He urged me to take lots of pictures, and ask lots of questions.
I employed my daughter as assistant and we wrangled an interview and personal tour with the engineer. As he showed us the towers, we learned of multiple mysteries that swirled about these towers.
The iconic design was from decades ago. No one knew why they were designed that way. Only 6 towers in the USA remained with that WWII design. The towers had been knocked down by a hurricane, and rebuilt rather than replaced. Why rebuild such an expensive, and strange design? Why not replace with modern towers? A WWII era rotating aircraft beacon perched on the transmitter building roof. No one knew why it was there, who put it there, or for what purpose.
I was hooked. Knowing nothing about radio towers, I set out to solve those mysteries. Along the way, I met the man who rebuilt the towers and became enmeshed in the life of tower engineers - engaged in the most dangerous job on earth.
The book developed a life of its own with mystery, history, love story, and inspirational courage and dedication of a unique group of engineers. Along the way, I solved every mystery, and discovered a bit of America's forgotten past.
