Valentine Williamsabout this book: This is the story of Jane, locked up and deemed criminally insane, for killing her two children.
In the hospital where she is held she develops good relationships with some of the staff and is allowed to use the 'quiet room' for meditation. Here she begins to recall her past life and make sense of it. Then along comes Dr Bruce Townsend, who wants to help Jane, but goes too quickly. His interventions open old wounds and she absconds from the hospital while attending her sister's funeral and heads back to Belgium and the scene of her crime. As the story unfolds, Jane comes face to face with the reality of her actions and sees that there is only way out.
This story, a first person narrative, was written after meeting some of the staff from a high security special hospital. It's a psychological study, and though the subject matter is serious, reviewers tell me it's engaging and hopeful to read.
Readers who like subject matter they can reflect on would find this book authentic and thought provoking.
Review: Losing It by Valentine Williams is a stark, cleverly written book. Despite a very difficult subject, the author manages to draw us very quickly into Jane's small world, and those who people it.
Review: I wasn't expecting to enjoy the book, I thought the story would be upsetting to read, but to my surprise it was very gentle and just drew me in. The style is understated but strangely powerful.
