about this book: I write contemporary suspense novels based on fairy tales, fantasy, and fables. Why not be inspired by Mother Goose? For Sweet Whispers of the Devil, I delved into the world of the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. Clearly, the title character struggled because the family dinner seemed a bit lacking and she had to whoop all the children before sending them to bed. While a unilateral whooping was always a threat in my house, I don't recall it ever happening. But the nursery rhyme left me with questions. How did she get so many children? And where was/were the daddy/daddies?
In this short story, Victoria Hall is a young woman on the way to become the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. For her, the only thing more terrifying than the memory of her own kidnapping is the reality of her son's kidnapping by the same man ... her father.
The result is not what Mother Goose a completely different direction from Mother Goose. Of course, being a psychological thriller other issues emerge, but that's what makes this story so much fun. A bit dark, but fun, nonetheless.
