LA Kentabout this book: By Best Adult Fiction winner L A Kent, Silent Gull is the cracking new read for DI Treloar mystery fans.
Great things were said by the Holyer an Gof judges about Broken Dove, and those looking forward to reading Silent Gull were no exception!
'Among so many "murder mysteries" currently available Broken Dove has an original and entertaining plot. I found it easy to read, thought-provoking and enjoyable.'
'I enjoyed the story very much and felt like it was well paced, not overly long and the characters were well defined. I liked the use of different fonts/printing style to strengthen the story telling. I could quite happily read this book again in the future.'
'A gripping crime novel with the main story set in Cornwall, but with another narrative running with it. The two stories have different tones and seem worlds apart at the beginning, but they gradually come together making it a real page turner with the style of the second story conveying the unbalanced mind of the main character.'
'This is the second in a series of novels about DI Treloar and the reader is gradually learning more about him and his colleagues and family. It will be interesting to read the third novel.'
'I also read it after we had done the judging and congratulate you on a really original plot, and as the last comment says ' it will be interesting to read the third novel.'!
Professor P K Harvey, Chair: Holyer an Gof Awards.
Fowey is a beautiful location in Cornwall, on the banks of the Fowey estuary, and it simply cries out for a murder mystery! It is where Daphne Du Maurier, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and Kenneth Graham did most of their writing so why not!
Silent Gull continues the evolving story of Detective Inspector Felipe Treloar and his family, his 'presumed drowned' father in particular, as well as those in Treloar's serious crime team squad.
Key characters in Silent Gull include Harry Forrester, a burnt out Michelin star chef who had a superb restaurant in Brighton before becoming a resident of The Valley of The Tides for recuperation and therapy, the son of a prominent media mogul and the daughter of an MP who are also at The Valley of The Tides for therapy and recovery.
Harry Forrester brings his well tried and trusted recipes and approach to cooking to readers through his cooking therapy sessions for residents and guests at The Valley of The Tides.
The Valley of The Tides was created by Hollywood superstar, Jackson Powers, who purchased and renovated an old property on the banks of the Fowey Estuary, and renamed it The Valley of The Tides, to help other parents avoid the life crushing event of the death of a child, as he did, from drug addiction. Other addictions are treated too by the team of professional staff.
A child's body is found in the water close to The Valley of The Tides which brings Treloar to the scene, and he is soon facing organised crime bosses, people trafficking and child kidnap.
Throughout, Treloar is dealing with issues around his own father.
Silent Gull is set just before Christmas, and brings interesting insight to the reality of pre Christmas times in a well known and popular Cornish town.
