When I came to write this story, I found the parts that related to this life extremely hard to write because of my emotional involvement. Even now, when I read some of the scenes, I find I am so caught up in the story that the tragedy of it strikes me all over again.
The other two lives of the women involved are purely fictional, and I am glad to say that it is not all tragic!
The title comes from a poem by Tennyson, which is eventually shown to be pertinent to the story.
Perhaps all authors write a book that resonates with them so strongly that they consider it their chef d'oeuvre, and it may be that although I have written other stories which are close to my heart, this will be the work that lives on. But that is for readers to decide, now and in the future.
