Ric Beardabout this book: Legacy Of Ashes is a new take on Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction in that it shows the world 100 years after the fall of civilization. Written for fans of hard sci-fi who enjoy a longer read with a slow unfolding of the big picture leading to a fast release, it follows the stories of four dissidents whose fates are mysteriously intertwined.
What Inspired me to write: My love of speculative fiction and complex, meandering plot lines.
My primary readers are mystery fans who enjoy a long read that mixes the slow draw of science fiction with the chapter pacing of a thriller.
I slaved over this one for a year.
The title popped out of a piece of dialogue that naturally encompassed the wider meaning of the book and the rest of the trilogy.
The hardest part was easily writing from so many points-of-view and drawing it altogether, into a cohesive story by the third act so that it would finish with a flourish that kept readers wanting more.
I researched a LOT for this piece of work. Technologies of tomorrow were a big point of research, as well as sociological and psychological reactions to extreme stress and PTSD.
I learned a lot about writing a novel from writing this one. It's a book I've wanted to write for some time and it taught me patience, above all other things.
To readers: Legacy Of Ashes is not for the faint-of heart. The language is, at times, brutal, in a representation of how I believe it would reflect the trauma of experiencing a fallen world, passed down from one generation to the next, as the human race tries to rebuild on a "Legacy Of Ashes" left by a generation who didn't see the forest of dependence for the trees.
