Richard Andrew Kingabout this book: This description is extremely personal. It comes more from my heart than from my head. But isn't that the truth of all poetry – that it springs from feelings deeply held within the heart, a depth which the mind can never know?
I love poetry. As a young child my mother weaned me on classics such as "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Lord Tennyson, "If" by Rudyard Kipling, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, "Nobility" by Alice Carey, "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley and a whole host of poetic gems.
In pursuing my B.A. in English, I always preferred, and still prefer, poems with rhyming patterns rather than free verse. There's an harmonic beauty and vocal symmetry in rhymes and cadences that allow a poem's message to sink into one's psyche. Plus, there's the challenge of using few words to express expansive ideas, creating an economy of expression that is hard to achieve but worthwhile in its results. Poets such as Alexander Pope, Lord Byron, John Keats, Percy Shelley, William Wordsworth, and, of course, the great bard himself, William Shakespeare all express poetic talent that will survive the ages. They, among others not mentioned here, are the masters of the poetic pen and an inspiration to far lesser talents such as myself.
Thus, 99 POEMS OF THE SPIRIT is anchored in rhythmic cadences and rhyming patterns. Furthermore, all of the poems share one or more spiritual truths from a cavalcade of sacred works, writers, and Saints throughout the ages. Some of these truths may be hard to swallow because they destroy delusions keeping us trapped in a worldly dungeon of darkness and despair. However, their purpose is not to promote our enslavement but our edification.
