Judd Robbinsabout this book: After 20 years as certified instructors in classical Pilates, we evolved our teaching methods in synch with the worldwide instructional expansion, growth, and evolution of Joe's original trainings. Evolution, in the case of Pilates' writings, began in 1934 with Your Health, in which he wrote about his theories of exercise, fitness and health. It continued in 1945 with Return to Life through Contrology, his book of classical exercises that included detailed descriptions and photo sequences for all 34 of his original exercises. We chose the title Pilates Evolution because it truly represents what has transpired around the world regarding Pilates instruction. You'll see in our writings how his dynamic work continues to this very day with new exercises, new equipment, and new enhancements to his original fitness programming.
This new book, Pilates Evolution, includes copyrighted versions of Joseph Pilates' first and only two published books. It also includes ten new chapters written by us that highlight, demonstrate, and clarify the most common, popular, and effective newest methodologies for Pilates' matwork instruction.
We have been inspired over twenty years by others who have also gone beyond the 34 classical mat exercises offered by Pilates that made no use of any apparatus or prop. One of Joseph Pilates' original students, Romana Kryzanowska, noted that if "you can do the mat work perfectly, you don't need the apparatus. But people love toys." We agree, but props are more than simply entertainment; they are facilitators. The students must learn the exercises properly, with or without an apparatus or prop, in order to enable their body to reflect the intent of each exercise. As Pilates would say, people must "get the method in their bodies".
Each piece of apparatus or prop has a unique repertoire of exercises that has evolved from Pilates' principles that are seen earlier in this book. We have kept our interest up, as instructors, for both fun and body-targeted purposes, by using props in our classes, such as the Magic Circle, elastic tubes and straps, foam rollers, small and large exercise balls, weights, and other inventive devices that we introduce in the chapters of Part III in this book.
We spent a year researching all the key certifying organizations around the world and how they have specifically enhanced Pilates' earlier work. We keep up with writings, videos, DVDs and actual class teachings from others, and have drawn upon all of it to write this new book. The hardest part of writing a book like this is deciding what to include and what to exclude. We're happy that Amazon reviewers (Average 4.5 out of 5 stars) have thus far agreed strongly with our material selections: "a great resource book--informing us of the history as well as the methods of Pilates" and "a worthwhile investment for Pilates enthusiasts".
