Doug Erlandsonabout this book: This book is written for students taking an introductory class in philosophy as well as anyone who wants a general overview of the discipline. It can be used as a supplement to an existing text or as the primary text in a course. This is how I have treated it in the introduction to philosophy classes I have taught recently.
When I began teaching introduction to philosophy to community college students nearly twenty years ago I soon sensed the need for a jargon-free supplement to the official college textbook. I began creating handouts on each of the major areas of philosophy. From year to year these handouts became more detailed. Eventually I compiled them into a single document, which I called a "classroom supplement."
My students found this supplement to be far more helpful than the official course text, so when I began publishing Kindle books, I reworked my supplement extensively, tightened up the wording, and made it into a Kindle book.
My wife and I brainstormed for quite some time before coming up with the title. We wanted a title that would identify this as part of a series and eventually hit on the word "Basics" as being part of the title. Two other books are part of this series: "Philosophy of Religion Basics" and "Bioethics Basics." We used "Jargon-Free" in the subtitle because we wanted to emphasize that this book used common, ordinary words that anyone could understand rather than the arcane jargon found in some philosophy books.
