Nancy M Christieabout this book: Change may be an inevitable part of life, but many times, we resist it, run away from it or are overwhelmed by the aftermath that follows it. We are afraid we can't handle what the change brings, and focus more on the losses than the gains. But all changes—those that bring us joy and those that cause us pain—bring with them the opportunity to grow, develop, explore new aspects of ourselves and find unsuspected abilities. And the more we accept change, the more we actively bring it into our lives, the stronger we become. That is the message of The Gifts of Change—that all change has the potential for good.
Although my life has been full of changes (and whose life has not?), this was most clearly brought home to me when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I had to come to terms with her illness and what it meant: the changes in her life and the way it affected me. And through the process, I learned to appreciate what those six years gave me: an even deeper, richer relationship with both my parents. Although The Gifts of Change is not about my mother's illness, the impact it had on me informed the content and inspired me to share my realizations with others who may be undergoing their own change.
