Debra Ann Millerabout this book: My grandmother lived with me for the past five years. We were very close and she was my biggest supporter in life. She always told me I was a gifted story-teller. I remember sitting by her bedside wondering how I could let her know how much I appreciated her always believing in me. I decided the best way to show her how grateful I was would be to write. I did that day after day, while sitting in her room, and I read each chapter to her as I went. Sadly, she didn't live long enough to hear the end of my story, but there are traces of her in it from beginning to end. My Grandmother inspired me to be my best, and I am doing just that.
The writing process?
The story itself was the easy part. My laptop had become an extension of my body, like a third limb. I couldn't walk past it without writing another sentence. I was so immersed in my story, I couldn't stop myself from writing. I would start as soon as the kids went off to school, and when they returned, I would still be in my sweats, unshowered and typing away. I had no concept of time, and all I ate was gummy bears. They were my writing must-have.
Reviewers have said the characters are really wonderful. It was my goal to create relatable characters and here's where I started:
Descended was created with one of my all-time favorite movies in mind...Disney's Tangled. At its core, Descended is a tale very similar, with Violet featured as a modern day Rapunzel and Carter as Flynn Rider. What is lovely about the character Violet is that she maintains her inherited innocence and sweetness, and yet represents the independent spirit and ingenuity of a modern heroine. It is a story of self-discovery, flight from the nest, and coming of age. It's also a novel that speaks to anyone who has faced, or is facing, the trials and tribulations of growing up.
The romance element in Descended:
Carter and Vie awaken each other to who they really are, and what they truly desire. Thus, it is a romance born of the most ideal circumstances: two people who bring out the best in each other, rather than a traditional "one needs the other" arrangement.
From the Reviewers:
• "I was drawn into the characters' lives and wanted more...the love story, the twist, the good vs. evil...loved it!!!"
• "Vie and Carter are both intriguing, charismatic characters that will make you feel like you are right there with them on their journey."
• "It is an impossible to put down, action packed, romantic, suspenseful read that is captivating. Miller manages to always maintain the element of the unknown that allows for many surprises and constantly keeps the reader guessing."
