Robert Hays

Author Robert Haysabout this book: My usual approach when writing a novel is to write a beginning and an ending, then pull these together with plot and character development. One advantage of this is that I know where I'm going and avoid writing myself into traps from which I later have to extract myself. Others may worry about lofty concepts such as theme; I am most concerned with continuity. If I know how my story ends, every scene needs to be a logical step toward that conclusion.

But notice that I said my "usual" approach. It doesn't always work this way.

The Baby River Angel came about in a different manner.

When a serious physical problem left me in a sort of day-by-day limbo, waiting for surgery, with my physical activity severely limited, just about the only thing I could do was sit at my computer and write. (Hey, don't feel sorry for me. Writing is one of the things I love best!)

My second novel, The Life and Death of Lizzie Morris, was in print. I had been planning the third, but hadn't progressed very far. So I sat down and started writing—with no clear notion how the story would end. And it was such fun. Not constrained by a fixed ending, I felt free to create characters, scenes, twists and turns in plot, setting details, whatever struck my fancy: Let's just see where this thing goes.

I've been a journalist most of my adult life and I tend to view the world realistically. Life doesn't always have happy endings. But this one, like I said, wasn't really planned

The result is the work, among all my novels, most consistently acclaimed by readers. Nobody doesn't like The Baby River Angel. Readers seem to find a great deal of joy in the story and love the happy ending. If you like happy stories with feel-good endings, even though the book as a whole includes an ample supply of mystery, intrigue and suspense, this one might be for you. Give it a fair look and see what you think.
