He feels abandoned and unable to figure why his life took such a turn. In an attempt to change, he abandons religion and is surprised to find that he copes much better. He has mystical dreams each night and a near-death experience.
Work is unsatisfying. He feels his efforts go unnoticed and he is constantly overlooked for promotion whole young people come and go under his tutelage.
He finds ways to get through each struggling month by taking little things from the office while he dreams of buying good food, eating in restaurants and buying new clothes. The mystical dreams are the main thread of the book that will inspire readers to think differently, just like Lewis does.
