Madison Kentabout this book: Madeline Donovan found that rather than being repelled by what she saw on the streets of Whitechapel in Stalking Jack the Ripper, she was intrigued and challenged by the idea of becoming a female detective. She decides when she returns to Chicago to try her hand at opening a detective agency.
Her first case comes from an unlikely source, her physician father. He has just treated a young woman for hysteria because her visiting sister has gone missing in the streets of Chicago. Madeline is employed to see if she can track down any leads to the disappearance, especially since the police feel she has voluntary gone missing perhaps after meeting a romantic suitor.
As she begins to follow the clues to this case, it repeatedly seems to end with The Harrison Hotel, a lavish hotel that has just opened literally within walking distance of her home. Other girls begin to go missing, and she begins to fear for their lives.
Her dearest friends that she met in London, Jonathan Franks and Hugh Scott also find their way to Chicago, and together they start on a terrifying journey to uncover the truth.
