B. A. Braxtonabout this book: I wanted to write a book with dentists as central characters because I am so familiar with the profession. In 1987, I graduated from a dental school in New Jersey and then practiced for several years.
I must have spent at least six months researching for this book and a year writing the story. Most of the dental aspects I knew from my experiences, but all of the rock and mineral information I had to learn on my own. For example, the title Pigeon Blood refers to the bluish-red color that the most valuable rubies in the world possess. I do a lot of research for all of the books I write and, as a consequence, I always end up learning so much.
The cover I chose shows a pigeon blood ruby in one of the "O"s of the word "blood," and the crystalline form for corundum is in the background. I thought that the simplicity of the cover design would accentuate the importance that rubies have in the story. After all, people are dying because of them.
It was my intention to have the book attract young adult readers as well as seniors and everyone in-between. And as far as males and females, it shouldn't make a difference. It is a dream of mine to have my stories enjoyed by all.
I have written for decades simply because I love to write. Selling books after all these years is only a bonus for me. If I am fortunate enough to have you read one of my books, please take a few minutes to let me know what you think of it; that's the best way I know to improve at the craft I love so much.
