Each of my novels (I have 4 published now) takes me 2 years to research, write and edit. I just can't work as fast as most of the authors I know, but I do spend much of that time walking the locations of my scenes and interviewing people who live in the area. So I guess that's all right, then. I don't really waste any of those 2 years. Really. I don't. Honest.
I write about people, not plots. Plots are a convenient crutch on which to hang a tale, but I write about people; how they react in stressful situations, how they deal with each other and how they (eventually) work out a solution to the problems in their lives.
That is just so much more interesting than some made-up plot.
But there is a plot in there, somewhere...
