Heather Havenabout this book: This is a book inspired by my mother's stink at Ringling Brothers' Circus back in its golden era. I wasn't around, but I'd heard stories about that time all my life. She also had written down incidents and, of course, there were tons of pictures. As she was getting on in years when I decided to write this documentary fiction, I did a lot of research and found her memories and knowledge to be spot-on. It took me six years to write this book. Trying to capture the truth of an important chapter of my mother's life, get it right, and honor her even though I was using a fictionalized storyline, held me up. What happened, ultimately, is the day-to-day life in the circus is accurate and true. The story and characters are totally made up. Because that's what I do: I write fiction. But using Mom as my 'muse' was a total blessing. I won a big award for the book around Mother's Day shortly after she passed. I know she was looking down on me from heaven above and smiling.
