Donna Huston Murrayabout this book: SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS challenges my main character, Ginger Barnes, with crimes occurring very close to home–literally. Her neighborhood friend gets killed during a burglary; then thefts, mailbox bashings, and another physical attack seem to make quiet Beech Tree Lane a dangerous place to live. This book contains my favorite character, a cantankerous older woman who lives in a dilapidated former mansion, cadges food, and looks like a bag-lady. Even though all the characters are totally made up with the exception of Gin, my taller, braver alter-ego, I was told many of my real neighbors tried to figure out which character they were–whether I'd met them or not! Such is the fun of writing mysteries…
Reviewers had this to say:
• "This third Ginger Barnes tale shows a smooth style, quiet humor, and a feeling for the texture of everyday life. Very highly recommended." Janet Overmyer, The Armchair Detective
• "[Readers] will surely appreciate Murray's smart, often insightful first-person narrative and her coherent characters." Publishers Weekly
