Book Review: GUILT TRIP (A Lauren Beck Crime Novel Book 2) by Donna Huston Murraycategories: Book, Strong Female Protagonist, Woman Sleuth, Suspense, Crime, Beach Reading, Mystery
Donna Huston Murrayabout this book: Undercover as a relative's girlfriend, Lauren accompanies a family to the Caribbean to scatter the ashes of a questionable suicide. For the low-maintenance ex-cop and cancer survivor, blending into the Roitman's lifestyle is like trying to breathe on the moon. The narcissistic mother bears watching—she's certainly watching Lauren—the father gets death threats from his stockholders, the son is an arrogant creep, and the youngest daughter is in therapy. Since one revealing slip-up could get Lauren killed, she had better bring her best game along with her bikini.
Author's Note: GUILT TRIP required research into things such as car brakes and private jets—online, of course. However, describing a beach resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, necessitated a more thorough study. Are those yellow lounges by the sea actually comfortable? Does anybody ever win in the casino? Exactly what is in Sancocho de 7 carnes? (Never mind, you can't cook it at home.) Onerous work, but seeing all those beach-readers kept me motivated.
PS Lauren's debut crime novel, WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU received an Hon. Mention for genre fiction from Writer's Digest.

Go along on this "Guilt Trip"What an enjoyable read! Whenever I pick up one of Donna Huston Murray's books I know I'll be involved in an intriguing and fun story. If you're a lover of mysteries that don't have you flipping pages to avoid the gore, this book is for you. Written in a lively fashion that keeps you going, you can relate to these folks, that is, some of them anyway.
Karen has lost her brother and Chantal her beloved husband. Did he really commit suicide or was there something more sinister going on? Karen's sister-in-law and former cop, Lauren is determined to find out for her family's sake. She enlists the help of the victim's brother (big mistake) and spends enough time with the grieving family to get at the root of why this tragedy happened.
This isn't the first Donna Huston Murray book I've read and it certainly won't be the last.
