However, in the course of writing it, it became a very different animal, although some of these aspects remain.
I started with the premise of a rich businessman, who was also due to become an English Lord, realising, at the age of forty five that he needed to marry.
He had never loved anyone, so had not considered matrimony. He now knew that he wanted an heir to all his money and property, as well as needing a social hostess and companion to various events. I then thought what happens next?
Well, the character Edmind De Quintin was born, and he proposed to his P.A. Mara, who fitted all his requirements. He explained to her that he didn't love her, and outlined what he wanted. She had always loved him, so agreed to the marriage thinking she could seduce him into loving her ...however she finds that this is an impossible task.. This is partly where the title comes from ... she is not a real wife...she is a counterfeit one.
Finding no love from Edmund, Mara embarks on a passionate Lesbian love affair with Tasha, which is very erotic and descriptive.
It is then the novel changed ... when Mara moves into Edmunds Gothic mansion, she discovers secrets about him, his past and his family. ...the book turns into a mystery/suspense ... together with noises in the night, and dark clad, sinister figures.
Mara and Tasha (she visits the mansion), discover a dungeon, hidden behind a secret door...full of sexual bondage equipment . Who uses it? ...another mystery. The two women get chased by 'the dark figure' escaping through a secret exit.
For several chapters, the clues and questions to these mysteries are explored. Meanwhile, Edmund is finally starting to fall for his wife. Much to her delight, and Tashas sadness.
So what happens? A great deal, as the book becomes a Thriller and all the threads are pulled together into an exciting and unexpected ending!
