about this book: Slow Death by Quicksilver is set in a small fishing village on the south west coast of Scotland, on the route from Glasgow to Stranraer, and therefore the route from university home for Ulster students in the early 19th century. That was my starting point with this, the ninth installment in the Murray of Letho series. Students who are just passing through become tangled in a nasty murder, a poisoning with mercury – but they knew the victim well and may be more involved than anyone realises. This book is for historical crime fiction readers - I hope you'll enjoy the atmosphere, the visit to busy Stranraer, the details of village life, the scenery - it's a lovely area I've known almost all my life, and it made a change for me to set a story there. I also enjoyed writing the character Walter, the boy who is Murray's servant. Though he's been a bit hopeless before, in this book he comes into his own.
