Lexie Conyngham about this book: This is the fifth in the Hippolyta Napier series, set in Deeside in Aberdeenshire in the 1830s. My research for this one led me up the back road from Ballater to Braemar on a stunning autumn day, gasping at the colours and the sheer beauty of the landscape around me. But any excuse to visit Ballater is a good excuse, as anyone who is familiar with the village will know. I always learn a bit more about Victorian medicine when I write one of these! It is maybe not quite cosy, but not noir either. You'll want to like historical crime fiction for it, but Hippolyta, a young doctor's wife with an infant and any number of cats, hens, etc., is a character I love writing. Her long-suffering husband Patrick, and their friend Dod Durris, also appear, trying to keep Hippolyta in check. And anyone who has previously encountered Mrs. Riach, the cook-housekeeper, is in for a delightful surprise as she makes her return!
