Ray Matthewsabout this book: I was inspired to write this book after a very good friend of mine suggested that I had a story to tell and shouldn't be so selfish as not to share it with everyone. I am not someone who generally has the time to sit still long enough to write a letter never mind a book, and at the age of 60 year it became a daunting task to even make my laptop work for me. I did give up a few times after hours of work would disappear before my eyes. I did eventually master Word, learning how to copy and paste, and eventually after about a year the book became a reality, and ready to publish. I am so happy now that i did find the time.
The main story is centered on a recent 100 mile international off road foot race around the circumference of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, in which I the author successfully became the first athlete to complete. the main aim of the book is to take the reader on a journey of discipline and mental strength, and to describe through storytelling the highs and lows of what it feels like to be taking part in my self inflicted challenges. I have endeavored to giving the reader the realistic feeling of being alongside me as I have to battle through the day and night almost entirely on my own. Then as the miles stack up, the mental and physical problems are highlighted as There are no options but to overcome each one to make it through to the finish.
Flitting in and out of the main event I describes the trauma and drama of a recent 100 km race across the Sahara Desert, and once again invite the reader along with me to share, and almost feel the despair, and exultation's, as I have to deal with the trauma of a sudden sand storm, and a broken toe. Years of training and competing enables me to successfully describe the physical and mental adaptations that all the athletes have to overcome to take on the less than suitable, for running conditions the desert throws up at them.
To answer a question that i am regularly asked, I blend into the story, an account going back in time to when, as the eldest son of a large family of boys, being brought up during and just after the war. Taking an enormous step into the world of Boxing and meeting two coaches who influenced, shaped and molded my life, teaching me not only how to box, but also about the values of respect, discipline, dedication and motivation, that have formed the basics of my way of life even today
Called upon to fill a gap, I delivered a motivational talk to a large group of fitness instructors, ending the night with a standing ovation, and has now launched myself into the speaking business. The decision to Writing this book has been the hardest task I have taken on to date. Would it be good enough? Would it be accepted for publishing?, then to actually letting it go, and the daunting feeling of exposing his soul, were all questions that made it difficult.
