Dr. Kenneth Lewis Andrus about this book: My motivation for writing this novel about the Spratly Islands began while I served on the staff of the Commander, Pacific Fleet. My initial focus was to provide insight to the complexity of the issues and the decisions to be made that frequently are glossed over by the short sound bites that make it to the headlines. I recall sitting at my desk going over the message boards noting that most Americans understood very little about the South China Sea and the Spratly Islands, let alone being able to point them out on a map. So began the premise of my novel - an inadvertent confrontation between the United States and China that almost results in war. As my research expanded including both actual military and geopolitical occurrences in the region, I began to flesh in my characters: President Randall Stuart, wresting with the decisions he must make and Navy SEAL, Mike Rohrbaugh, who is thrust into the vortex of the worsening crisis. The take-away for my readers would be, no matter what you may see in the headlines, there is much more that goes on in Washington and the front lines that they will never see or appreciate the emotional toll it takes on those who are make the decisions that guide our nation.
