Tori L. Harrisabout this book: I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan myself, and my goal with the Terran Fleet Command Saga was to explore many of the classic themes I love from the genre, but not in the same way we've all read a hundred times before. While writing, I always tried to keep the "movie version" of the story playing in my mind and constantly asked myself the question, "Is this something I'd want to see?" When the answer was no, I would aggressively cut sections that I didn't feel were adding to the story or keeping the reader engaged and entertained. I hope you will agree that the result is a fun, interesting page-turner that will leave you asking for the next book in the series.
Regarding the primary theme, I've always liked the first contact scenario from the Carl Sagan book/movie "Contact," but that story left me wanting to know much more about the alien civilization and their motives. Everyone has an agenda ... and I was interested in a story where the aliens were offering humanity the proverbial "double edged sword." What if they provided world-changing technology, but with the ultimate in strings attached? What if their goal was to use our race as a proxy to further the strategic objectives of their empire (just as the U.S. and former Soviet Union did during the Cold War)? What if our other neighbors in our section of the galaxy were not happy with the implications of this arrangement? Finally ... what if, unbeknownst to all of the other parties, humanity had a few surprises and an agenda of their own?
Why did I write this story? I have wanted to do so for some time, but finally got an opportunity to dedicate more time to the effort between consulting projects during the summer of 2015.
Who are the primary readers? I would say Sci-Fi fans in general, but particularly those readers who enjoy the military / space opera categories. Not to compare myself to the big league authors just yet, but if you enjoy John Scalzi, Joshua Dalzelle, Ryk Brown, or Michael Hicks, you should give the Terran Fleet Command Saga a try.
