Cory Y. Standbyabout this book: I have been thinking of writing about my life full of emotional highs and lows for some years, and then last year the fates seemed to conspire to give me the time and opportunity to do so, as my older sons were leaving home for University and to work. I was able to sell my large family home and downsize, and I used the change in my circumstances as the ideal time to reflect on my rather full life, as I now approach my 50th birthday - hence the title, and the reflection of some of the madness I have lived through in my pursuit of finding love again after my marriage failed, and simply filling the void at times too. There are no excuses, I did what I did by choice, whether I was thinking rationally or not! Looking back, older and wiser now (no longer young and stupid, I hope!) I can see that much of it was simply the momentum of life, grief, adrenalin and so much more carrying me forward, and my way of dealing with life's pressures. Some too was shaped by my fatalistic view of the world as a result of two young deaths of loved ones in my teenage years and early 20's. Could I ever have had an ordinary life, I wonder? Do any of us really have such a thing? Is there any such concept as a perfect life? Or do we strive for so much, and never quite achieve it all.
Hopefully readers will identify with some of my issues and traumas, and relate to some of my mistakes to see that we are all human, all fatally flawed and that 'to err is human'.
I seek to explore the eternal dilemma of finding love, and the huge emotional disparities between men and women, the way we think, feel, react, communicate and show why relationships can be so problematic - which I have no doubt every reader can identify with!
The book took me about 3 months to transfer from the swirling thoughts in my head to a final manuscript, working fairly solidly 3 or 4 days a week to achieve this. Like so much else in life, that too was a tricky balancing act alongside real life. I'm sure I was like every author, losing myself at times in my manuscript and having to force myself back into the real world as required.
I'm told by those who have read it so far that it's an interesting tale of the full gamut of human emotions. I hope many others find it so too.
