Terry Ward

Author Terry Wardabout this book: In this autobiography covering the first twenty five years of my life, I describe my rustic, barefoot childhood and how, still at a very young age, I set out to make my own way in a world that is now lost to us forever. Having devoured dozens of boys own adventure stories, it seemed like the thing to do at the time. I'm sorry, mother, but the spirit of adventure was strong in me.

One of the first things I discovered after leaving home was that girls liked playing around the edges of sex, just as much as boys did. This came as a bit of a shock to me, because many of the books I'd read featured young heroes rescuing innocent maidens in distress;receiving, perhaps, a proffered hand and a modest kiss on the cheek for their troubles. I abandoned the likes of Dornford Yates in favour of DH Lawrence and Hemingway.
Then it was a soldier's life for me. Finding myself posted to a far-flung trouble spot, I soon felt that I was a character in one of GA Henty's 'three cheers for the British Empire' stories; even more so after I volunteered to serve with the elite Trucial Oman Scouts, and was accepted. The last days of the Rac, indeed. [see 'Are You the Man?' my collection of TOS veterans reminiscences]

I have fleshed these memoirs out with some quirky verse and a couple of equally quirky short stories. I do hope you enjoy reading them.

My life did not stop at the age of twenty five, of course. One of these days, if I can stand the 'me-me' and 'I did this and that' sort of stuff; unavoidable when one is writing an autobiography, I might offer you 'Adventures in the Grub Game'. It could be as satisfying as having lunch at The Savoy Grill!
