Terry Wardabout this book: What I'm offering to you here is a unique historic document. It is a written and photographic record of day to day life in that little-known, swashbuckling, desert force, The Trucial Oman Scouts. For twenty years, Arab troops, trained and led by volunteer British officers and NCO's, maintained law and order in a primitive, desert wilderness almost as large as the United Kingdom. It was my privilege to serve with them and, years later, create the Trucial Oman Scouts Association. You can still view some of us wearing our shemaghs [Arab head gear] at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sundays.
Accounts such as these are normally slanted from a senior officer's point of view. Here, for a refreshing change, I have concentrated on collecting veteran British NCO's accounts of their personal exploits and experiences while serving with the force. I edited their contributions, added a large number of donated, rare photographs and, with the technical assistance of TOS veteran, Hugh Nicklin, used them to create this rarity.
Are You the Man? is a superb gift for those who are serving, or have served, in the armed forces, or have an interest in British military history.
