Carol E. Andersonabout this book: The underlying theme of my memoir is found in the question: How do you live an authentic life while keeping a secret? In my case, that secret was about growing up in a fundamentalist family and being gay—a secret that governed every part of my life for the fifteen years I kept it from my family and friends. I believe that we are all wired to live in alignment with our values and to express the unique person we are. Failing to do so creates constant inner turmoil and disempowers us from giving our gifts to the world.
While the book is about my secret of being gay, I believe the lessons apply to anyone who is hiding something important from someone they love. Every secret keeps a veil between you and others and prevents the level of emotional intimacy that is possible. It is my hope that my story inspires others to be courageous in telling important truths about themselves to the people they love and to live more authentically in all of their relationships.
The greatest gift given me in writing my memoir was a deep appreciation for the complexity and beauty of human beings and gratitude for my courage to take up the struggle to be free.
This book is for anyone who wants to explore what it means to be human and is looking to find courage in themselves to be who they were meant to be.
