Book: D. H. Lawrence A Personal Record by E.T. Jessie Chambers and Marciano Guerrerocategories: Book, D.H. Lawrence, Sons and Lovers, Autobiographical Sketch, Memoir
Jessie Chambersabout this book: E.T. is the pseudonym for Jessie Chambers. This personal memoir provides intimate details of D. H. Lawrence's formative years of adolescence and early manhood. The narrative is of an early friendship, and perhaps platonic romance between Lawrence and Jessie. 'E. T.' has here set down her recollections of this early friendship, and the story has involved a vivid and detailed picture of Lawrence's life during the formative years of adolescence and early manhood. The portrait is unique, as was the intimate knowledge of Lawrence at the time, and many important details of his upbringing and education are here given which but for this personal record must have remained unknown. The narrative is of an early friendship, in many ways idyllic, which was shipwreck for reasons beyond the control of the protagonists. Jessie’s prose is agile, though measured most of the time, her narration —at suspenseful moments— gallops and soars through falling and rising skies of memory like a free Pegasus. All in all, a wonderful, and delightful reading.
