In Spring of 2007 I collapsed with cancer of the liver and my wife, Rhian, was told by my Swansea doctors I wouldn't live; that was the only thing they got wrong. When I refused to die, they referred me to Birmingham and just over a year later I was given a full liver transplant at QEH. A week later I walked out of hospital, albeit bent double.
While awaiting my transplant - there is a grim period when you can only live in hope that an organ will become available – I did a sponsored jump off Langland Cliffs on the Gower Peninsula and raised a couple of grand for Cancer Research UK. Since my survival I have been contemplating ways of making a more permanent donation to the battle with Cancer. As a result, I have convinced my publisher that we should donate ten percent of profits from all sales of Malpractice to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital liver unit.
In return he has convinced me that I should write two more books about the hapless Mr Tony Stamford (Dark Practice and Out of Practice) to complete a trilogy. Ten percent of proceeds from the sales of all three will then go to support the ground breaking research and life-saving surgery that the QEH unit carries out. I hope you enjoy Malpractice all the more knowing you have contributed to such a worthy cause.
