Robert I. Katzabout this book: I am a physician who spent many years in an academic practice. The Chairmen is the fourth book in the Kurtz and Barent mystery series. All four books have been informed by my medical and academic experience.
In this book, the Chairman of Cardiac Surgery is about to retire. The Chairman of Anesthesiology is making himself so obnoxious that his department is in open revolt and the Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology is being stalked by a lunatic.
Richard Kurtz, a surgeon and the series' protagonist, has been instrumental in solving three murders at Easton Medical Center. Kurtz had hoped that his days of fighting crime fighting were over, but when stalking turns into assault and then into vandalism, he is dragged back into the fray.
The Chairmen will appeal to all mystery readers, particularly those who enjoy the work of Patricia Cornwell, Richard Mabry, Robin Cook, Kathy Reichs and Johathan Kellerman, and it will also appeal to those curious as to what goes on behind the scenes of a major academic institution, the politics, the maneuvering and the compromises that take place in order to assure the smooth and sometimes not-so-smooth functioning of the hospital and the school.
