about this book: A recently-divorced woman, Alicia Burrowes, moves to the beautiful old city of Antigua in Guatemala to restart her new life in a romantic and legendary setting; she has an old friend who works as the manager of a small hotel on the city's outskirts and with whom she shares an unusual creative relationship, he's young and gay and a playwright, she's older and straight and a novelist, but together they help each other's work and enjoy each other's company. A younger Guatemalan man, Efrem, who comes to repair her computer, engages her with his life story and the price he's paid for foreign interference in his life; a former travel agent with his own business, he and his sister have been radicalized politically by life events at the time he and Alicia meet. She starts doing research into Guatemala's past and discovers some unwholesome truths as she and Efrem start to fall in love, both afficionados of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel, Love in the Time of Cholera, finding it very appropriate to their growing feelings for each other. Can Alicia really let go of her past in Colorado and join Efrem in his life in Guate, as it's called by locals? Or will her daughter's difficult pregnancy draw her back to live in the States?
