Laurie Boris

Author Laurie Borisabout this book: The title of Sliding Past Vertical, a literary love story, is based on a term used in competitive diving. If you mess up your dive and don't get your body angled to enter the pool perpendicularly to the surface, you'll make a big splash (not a great thing in diving) and leave a bad final impression for the judges. Sarah, the female lead in the novel, was on the diving team in high school until she developed this affliction. Despite her coach's help, she couldn't get her form right and had to quit the sport. That's years behind her now, and as we start the story, she's a graphic artist living in Boston. But after a series of horrible mistakes turn her into a walking disaster area, Sarah believes that the error in her diving has bled into the rest of her life. Her recent string of poor decisions leave her unemployed and almost homeless. Fortunately for her, she has remained friendly with Emerson McCann, her old college boyfriend, who stayed in Syracuse after they graduated. Still struggling with his complicated feelings for her, he comes to her rescue, with his housemate tagging along as backup. But Sarah convinces herself that the only way to correct her crooked trajectory is to return to the scene of her last big mistake and start over. This puts her back in Syracuse. And much too close for everyone's comfort.

• "Laurie Boris has crafted a compelling story without gimmickry or contrivance. In short, Sliding Past Vertical is not to be missed." — AIA Reviewers

• "It is a complex set of characters acting out their lives in a complex time, but everything from the personalities to the geography of the era is pitch perfect. Highly entertaining and thoughtful book." — AE Drury
