Endri Shqerraabout this book: 'Word Formation' and 'context' are considered the two main factors which account for the vocabulary growth to early school-age English children. Of course, this is a passive vocabulary growth, i. e., children infer and learn the meaning of new words in a passive way rather than memorizing lists of words. We all are witnesses of such passive vocabulary growth. How 'context' serves to infer the meaning of new words has been studied in depth. On the other hand, how word formation knowledge enhances vocabulary growth has been studied only in technical terms and little is known how it assists second language learners in enlarging their vocabulary.
The book puts side by side the way word formation devices are acquired in both pupils' L1 & L2. This way we can see how the acquisition differs in L1 & L2 acquisition. Furthermore, we can see how students' first language facilitates the acquisition of word formation devices of the target language and in what aspects of word formation second language learners are capable of reaching a native-like acquisition of word formation devices of the target language. In the last chapter, the book offers suggestions over the way word formation devices can be taught to second language learners, using inferences for both L1 & L2 acquisition of word formation devices.
