Brendan Gerad O'Brienabout this book: Ireland 1945
A young lad Frankie Rowe finds a silver cigarette case in the attic of an old house he's helping to clear out, and he pawns it.
In the meantime Florence Kite finds letters and a newspaper cutting hidden in the lining of her late mother's handbag. And what's in the letters shatters her. The cuttings are about a badly injured man Marcus Fanning being rewarded a medal for bravery and receiving an engraved cigarette case. And to her horror the letters state that this man, Marcus Fanning is the real father of Florence Kite.
But Florence can't find any trace of him. It appears that Marcus disappeared off the face of the earth twenty five years ago on his way to a new job.
Then Florence recognises the cigarette case in the pawn shop window and she believes whoever pawned it must have crucial information about what happened to Marcus. She goes in search of young Frankie Rowe to ask him. But she's too late. Frankie's body is found the next day hidden in a ditch.
