Book: A Small Inheritance by Pat Jourdancategories: Book, History, Politics, Religion, Nigeria, Dublin, Ireland
Pat Jourdanabout this book: I found a mass of old newspapers under the carpets of a house in Ireland, which formed the basis of the story. The assortment of reports from the 1920s Civil War contrasted with the Celtic Tiger disruption of the country in the 2000s.
Kitty and Simon are strangers who have been left a run-down house and lands in the middle of the countryside.Simon is almost a recluse, who deals in poitin with his friend Josh. Both of them have been stealing from the house before Kitty appears.Unfortunately she and Josh then have a haphazard relationship which causes more trouble.
It took a couple of years, off and on, to complete it, as more ideas kept crowding in. I wanted it to show the transition into a modern state from an agricultural and religious background, with all the losses involved.
The cover is my painting "Derelict Cottage" which summed up the situation and yet manages to give it a romantic gloss.
