Nesly Clergeabout this book: This novel, The Anatomy of Cheating, explores the dynamics of love, lust, longing, sexuality, commitment, and loyalty—dynamics humans wrestle with nearly every moment of every day, in one form or another.
Chelsea Hall knows of two confirmed times her husband, Garrett, has cheated on her, but suspects it's more than that, despite his promise that he's now being faithful to their marriage. Garrett is a successful doctor whose level of infidelity, which Chelsea is unaware of, might be considered an addiction to sex by some. Her deepest desire is for their relationship to be strong, loving, intimate. But Garrett's behaviors and arrogance do everything but nurture this. His lavish gifts no longer make up for his deficits and the three-year absence of love-making with his wife; they only confirm he's up to something—again. She's learned a specific lesson: the more extravagant the gift, the more egregious the sin.
Chelsea aches with a sense of betrayal and abandonment, prompting the dark vortex she's in, to continue to imprison her. Then she meets Luke Thompson, the handsome author she admires, who is as unhappily married as she is, as well as a different race—a man who finds her so enticing, he's willing to risk everything to be with her. Decisions have consequences, as each main character in the story discovers.
What causes people to cheat on their spouse or partner is explored through the characters and their choices. Their reasons and justifications are numerous. The core message about consequences—potential or real—is demonstrated in this book through inner and outer conflicts each character creates then is forced to confront. It's a realistic journey into the lives of several individuals who deal with cheating in various ways. Readers who've experienced infidelity, from either side of that coin, will find themselves identifying with the emotions of one or more characters. Those who've never had such an experience will find the story flashes like a neon warning sign.
The Anatomy of Cheating takes readers on a ride with unexpected twists and turns that leave them wondering what will happen next. The characters are compelling and familiar, the story gripping, keeping you turning pages to find out who is innocent, who is guilty, as well as who pays.
