Frank Kusyabout this book: Ever thought how cool it must have been, backpacking round India in the '80s? Well, think again. In this classic best-selling 'diary of disaster', two British backpackers plot a crazy course through the Indian sub-continent, ending up in the foothills of the Himalayas. Easy to read, interesting and funny, you'll feel you are there with Frank and Kevin, cooped up in trains, starving for days and then going on massive binges, going thirsty and then drinking coffee, only to find that it's been sweetened with baboon's milk.
'Kevin and I' was my first published book, and was researched pretty much...ahem...on the job, being the result of copious diary entries and tape recordings made on numerous bus and train journeys through India and Nepal. My inspiration, the thing that made me want to write it, was that Kevin should never have been there, he was allergic to India, everything (and I mean everything) was out to get him - dogs, mosquitoes, holy men, even cows and goats. The resultant hilarity was something I really felt I had to share with people!
My second inspiration was that I wanted to check out, and write about, the birthplace of Buddhism. It didn't quite work out that way.
