Deborah Petersabout this book: An Immigrant's Tale took about 3 years to complete. I began writing it because I was angry at the system. It took her 23 years to finally become eligible to receive her green card. She had lost her mother during those years and was unable to return home to bury her. This is a tale of a young woman who gallantly left her country for a better life but instead was burdened and oppressed by her experiences in the U.S. She was forced to stick it out since she had already given up everything she had when she left her country for this new life. The hardest thing for me to explain was the death of her mother. I needed the ability to fully describe her emotions so that readers can understand her pain and the actual impact of not having the freedom to travel to her country and then return to where she now knows as home.
This story has already been helpful to other immigrants like her who feel like they are alone in a cold and unfeeling world. People feel comforted, secure and hopeful when they know someone else has suffered their dilemmas and have successfully survived and prospered. I would like my readers to read with an open mind and note that this is a book based totally on a young woman's emotions during her quest for citizenship. Whether she was right or wrong, it's not what matters in this recount of her life.
