Mark C Suttonabout this book: 'Gilbert and Sulliman, and the Curse of the Red Spider' is a surreal semi-fantasy humour novel that focuses on a down-on-his-luck unemployed former factory worker, Gilbert, who lives alone in the West Midlands, UK, and a mysterious toy-maker from Mosul in Iraq, Sulliman, who turns up unexpectedly and unannounced one day at Gilbert's home, due to an e-mail communication that has gone horribly wrong.
The unlikely pair become good friends, and soon become embroiled in several potentially deadly situations, from finding themselves accidentally aboard an unmanned rocket bound for the fiery surface of Venus, to being trapped in an abandoned gravel pit whilst surrounded by an escaped pride of Lions.
Are Gilbert and Sulliman just the victims of misfortune, or is there something more sinister going on, and does it have anything to do with the ancient artefact that the Iraqi toy-maker has accidentally brought home from the local museum? And who, or what, is Sulliman on the run from?
'Gilbert and Sulliman' was an idea that I had some years back, and was based, originally, on our cat called Gilbert, who is a bit dim. Five years ago, I wrote a quick outline for a script to be called, funnily enough, 'Gilbert and Sulliman', and most of the elements in that script are included in the novel, for instance the 'UK Phaeton' rocket, the escaped pride of lions, and the toxic cloud that threatens to engulf our heroes as they're trapped on a friends roof.
Hopefully at some point this year, 'Gilbert and Sulliman's' story will be concluded with the sequel 'Gilbert and Sulliman, and the future that never was.'
