William Rand

Author William Randabout this book: The story "Ghost Field" began as a challenge to myself. As I wrote, it became more. As a writer and teacher of creative writing, I soon realized that the physical sense most often, and most easily, used by writers is that of sight. I was no exception. Visual details came relatively easily to my writing, but I had to work harder to include descriptive details of the other senses. I wondered if I could write a story in which sight was eliminated for most of the scenes. The obvious setting would be a cave. The only senses available to me would be hearing, touch, taste and smell.

"Ghost Field" began as a story about a character lost in a cave: simple enough. As I wrote, I decided to add another challenge: a protagonist of a different age than me. Scott, my protagonist, emerged as a high school aged boy with asperations of becoming a geologist. Curiosity draws him into a cave. Horror, my usual genre, takes over from there. What happens, I wondered, if a boy, drawn into an underground cavern, becomes hopelessly lost, then threatened by a terrifying creature? Trapped in total darkness, Scott becomes aware that the little dog he followed into the cave is something else. Escaping with his sanity becomes the least of his problems.

Of the nearly sightless story, The Prometheus Review says, "'Ghost Field' is a truly terrifying tale of haunting and horror underground, in the shadows and spaces where one cannot move and creatures stalk the flesh of the living."
