Vanessa Brooksabout this book: Last year whilst in London on a sightseeing tour of Buckingham Palace, we decided to take a walk along the Thames River. There were quite a few modern day mudlarks out searching for pieces of history on the rivers shore, most with metal detectors but some more traditionally digging. The seed of a new book was sown.
I have written a series of tales set in the Georgian era of English history but now I wanted to set a book in Victorian times. So many tales are written about the aristocracy so I decided to write about ordinary people in the 1870's period. The story in Mudlark Waif begins out on the sub continent at the time of the British Raj in India. It is the story of Elspeth Merryweather. This young woman is left all alone without any family support when her father suddenly dies. She has two choices, return to England, to a homeland she has never visited, or marry Captain Henry Wooten. She chooses the latter, marriage to the captain. She quickly regrets her hastily made decision. He is a cruel man and Elspeth is abused and unhappy. Henry sends his wife to England alone and un-escorted.
Elspeth meets another man, Professor Adam Beresford, aboard the ship. On the voyage Adam proves himself to be everything that her husband is not, he is firm but kind and Elspeth soon learns the difference between Wooten's abuse and Adam's loving correction.
A woman is made up of many aspects of personality and Elspeth is no exception, she is a young Victorian woman whose character has been formed by circumstances. Elspeth is lifted from despair only to have her hopes dashed by a cruel twist of fate which changes everything. A simple kindly act on her part leaves her with total amnesia. Remembering nothing of her previous life she awakens with no previous memory of her past. Can she survive the rigors of poverty in Victorian London?
Turning to mudlarking as a way of survival will she have the strength to sustain her through desperate times? Will she and Adam Beresford be reunited and if they are, will Elspeth find enough courage to become her own person and be able to rekindle the passion she once felt for her lost love? Can an emerald, the mystical Shiromani, help bring these two star crossed lovers together to form the bonds that are now lost?
• Vanessa has the talent to build a world that you can visualize; she creates characters that draw you into that world. Add intrigue, torment, struggles, angst and passion and you have a book that skates along that dark edge. Mudlark Waif will have you holding your breath as you turn the pages. It will take you on a journey that you will be glad you've taken.

• Beautifully written and exceptionally well-researched. The historical details add richness to what is already a wonderful, sensuous tale filled with tragedy, danger and a love that would not be denied.
