Linda Georgeabout this book: My favorite decade to write about has always been the 1880s, and because I'm a native Texan, and my accent comes through in my writing, I've always had luck writing about the west. The idea for this book was born the first time my husband and I visited Durango, Silverton, and Ouray on a six-week RV trip through Colorado in 1976. As an aspiring novelist during that time, I collected information on every place we visited, focusing on the silver boom days and historical aspects of the silver mining towns that grew around the source of silver during the 1880s.
SILVER LADY centers on Kate Mathison's quest to find her father, who deserted the family when she and her brother were children. After two decades, Kate believes him to be dead. But then she receives a telegram from him, sent from Silverton, begging her and Ben to come and help him defend his mine against claim-jumpers. Before long, Kate is left to make the journey alone. The idea of traveling alone from Montana to Silverton was terrifying to me. I never would've made it without help. I knew Kate would have to have a guide--someone who knew the way and could provide protection on the way to Silverton. And, since this was a romance, he had to be someone she'd come to love and never want to leave after they reached their destination.
After all these years, and after writing 68 nonfiction books for children and teens, I yearned to return to my first love--writing romance fiction. Silver Lady had been waiting all those years. I read it again and loved the characters as much as I'd loved them when I wrote the first draft and called it PURE SILVER. Kate and Drew had waited a long time to share with readers the story of how they met and fell in love. I hope you will enjoy their story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
