Elizabeth Baileyabout this book: There is a strong French element in this novel. Not an unusual feature of my stories, largely because many of them are set in the late Georgian period around the time of the Revolution. This one not only features a French hero, but my heroine is hampered by one short leg and has to wear a heavy built-up boot to compensate.
Imagine a lonely cottage where a young disabled woman lives alone with only her maid. Strange noises in the night? Was it a cat? But morning produces a dying man lying by the stove in the lean-to. Determined to keep him alive, Grace sets about a rescue.
When Grace discovers he is a Frenchman, possibly a spy, she is torn. A patriotic Englishwoman in a time of war with France ought to inform the authorities at once. She must, of course, but Grace determines no one is going to take her Frenchman out of her care.
But Henri is no ordinary man. His pursuers won't rest, he knows, until he is dead. Why are they after him? What has he done? He will not burden Grace with the truth for fear it may put her in danger too. Can Grace keep him alive against all the odds?
