Gini Rifkinabout this book: Although naïve by upbringing, Trelayne St.Christopher finds the gumption and curiosity to live-out adventures the likes of which she only reads about in novels. Her (and our) hero, Walker Garrison, Yankee sea captain extraordinaire has it all—except the wife he loved dearly and the piece of his heart that broke when she died. Separated by an ocean, Destiny still finds a way to bring them together.
Almost Gothic in nature, Victorian Dream reminds me of the historical romances upon which I cut my teeth—with a big dose of added spice. Being an Anglophile, I love the historical offerings of England, and actually the entire United Kingdom, there is always something new to learn regardless of era. I try very hard to infuse the true flavor of these times-gone-by into each book. And as far as history, which I feast upon in the stories I enjoy reading, the factoids are hopefully slipped in unnoticed, but appreciated.
The distinction between the Haves and the Have Nots was at a near critical level during Victorian times. The population increased dramatically and the industrial revolution put many people out of work. Although my heroine is somewhat naive, she has the compassion to recognize the misery in the streets around her, and the courage to try and do something about it. When her parents are injured in America she is determined to take over their duties whether charitable or business oriented.
In Victorian Dream there is a bit of mystery, a villain to hate or perhaps one to pity, and watching Trelayne grow on a personal level and fall in love, amidst all the Victorian trimmings, was a joy to write and I hope a joy to read.
