Elizabeth Baileyabout this book: This short story was born out of a play I wrote when I was teaching and directing drama at a school. We used to turn into a theatre company and one year I wrote Hugo Spiffing and the Case of the Dying Swan, which was a spoof murder mystery set in the 1920s.
I enjoyed the style so much, I kind of rewrote Hugo and turned him into Kenton Lane, amateur detective. It's not a murder mystery, but Kent gets to solve a crime and finds himself falling for the suspect.
The story is very much a spoof, fast-paced and a little bit crazy! Kent can't be serious for five minutes, much to Valerie's annoyance.
Kent is sent for to Lady Lauderdale's home to find out who stole her ruby necklace. Poor relation Valerie is detailed to help the detective until she becomes suspect number one. But Kent has a trick or two up his sleeve and is not above setting unwary traps for the real thief.
