Brenda Whitesideabout this book: Post-War Dreams took me several years to write. I wrote the first draft, set it aside, and went on to publish several other books. When I came back to it, I hacked it up and made it much shorter—and it's still my longest book.
Readers will be deep into the late 1940s. It's an era that evokes emotion and romance. I grew up listening to enchanting stories of those years as lived by my mother and father. My mother slept in Hobo jungles and hopped freight trains. My father quit school and went to work to support a fatherless family. The times were tough for both families. I took those tales and weaved them into my book.
In Post-War Dreams, my heroine, Claire Flanagan lives alone with her father. Her mother died when she was three. Benjamin Russell helps support five brothers and sisters. His father abandoned the family years before. Claire and Benjamin are characters from my heart.
This was a wonderfully spun novel. It really had the feel of post WWII life.
… well told, & poignant, with true to life aspects such as pin curls, jalopies, & 1940s makeup & movie stars.
