Geoffrey Lawsonabout this book: "Forgiven is a historical novel that starts in New Zealand and moves to South Africa at the beginning of the 2nd Anglo-Boer war. Richard meets Rachel and falls head over heels before moving to another town to court her. She is intelligent, sophisticated and charming, but all is not what it seems. Brought down by rumor and innuendo, she reaches a low point in her life before things improve with Richards support. Then, he serves in the Anglo-Boer war and leaves her under a cloud. Once in South Africa, Richard is soon drawn into the murky world of counter-espionage and finds more excitement than he bargained for, and it is only when he witnesses the pitiful death of another that he realizes the value of what he has left behind.
Forgiven was inspired by a previous work, a history about the Anglo-Boer war. Using the knowledge gained by research seemed a 'novel' idea for a novel and Forgiven was born. Combining a fictional love story, some family history and the Anglo-Boer war was exciting and a pleasure to write, combining as it does with my considerable knowledge of how life was lived in those times. Forgiven is a no nonsense novel that combines love, hate, forgiveness, hardship and life's little ironies as Rachel and Richard struggle to overcome their difficulties.
• "Lawson has created a readable romantic fiction set in colonial new Zealand. his historical facts are his greatest strength. The protagonists are strongly portrayed plus room for romance. Easy to read and delightful I enjoyed the book. I recommend a look." — J Doherty (abridged)
